Background checks - is it really necessary?

- The short answer is no. It probably shouldn't be necessary. Opponents of background checks have a reasonable starting point in saying: ”I've built up a very good gut feeling through 20 years of work experience. I can sense if the candidate is right for our company.”.

If we are to shake that belief, we need to pull a few examples out of the hat. And no, they are not fictitious and made up to support our point. They are just a small selection of cases yourCompany has dealt with in the past year.

Case 1:

A middle manager had two CVR numbers in addition to his regular job, which he ”used” as subcontractors. He approved his own invoices and got the company to pay. Total loss of over 2 million DKK over an extended period.

Case 2:

A trusted employee systematically sold the company's goods through the back door on online platforms. Total losses of over 2 million DKK over a 3-year period.

Case 3:

A manager had a gambling problem and took out more than 10 different loans over a short period of time. He was fired due to unstable performance. He then applied for a job with a competitor, who hired him on the spot due to his long experience.

Case 4:

A CEO needed to be hired for a high position. His CV showed a distinguished career - but no one had noticed the 7 bankruptcies he had in his background. It was only discovered when he clearly didn't have the right skills.

Case 5:

An applicant for a job had a business attached to his residence. This business had nothing to do with the applicant - but belonged to a family member who was a publicly known member of a known biker club and who was in prison in a serious criminal case.

Common to the above examples is that they could have been remedied with a background check. Either as part of the recruitment process, as part of whistleblower inquiries or as part of an annual service check of the employee base.
Our philosophy is that risk should be taken on with eyes wide open, rather than just keeping them closed and accepting consequences as they come.

We often hear statements like: ”We trust our colleagues and our suppliers, otherwise they would never have been part of the company”.

We can only answer that: So should you - but can that trust be abused without your knowledge?

It's funny that you have to Know Your Customer (KYC) - but what about Know Your People (KYP) when they have access to your IT systems, finances, goods, trade secrets and much more?

yourCompany offers tiered background checks using Open Source Intelligence. Whether it's for your HR department, compliance department, external recruitment partner or finance department, we are ready to help you reduce your risk. There are many more possibilities than you might think.

Did we mention that you can also perform product monitoring - ensuring that your products are not sold illegally on platforms other than yours?
