Businesses with cars in their fleet rely on fuel. Gasoline, diesel or electricity. Unfortunately, it's a known issue in many companies that their fuel consumption seems high, fluctuates and is difficult to optimize - but ghost refueling is something you can do something about!
One of our good customers was experiencing a large black hole in their entire fuel account. Or to put it another way - their fuel suppliers were living well off their high consumption. However, the customer had a feeling that the numbers didn't add up, but how should they structure their efforts to tackle the problem?
Together we created a project with the following working theme: Ghost refueling. In other words, illegal refueling that resulted in losses for the customer.

 

Project questions were formed:
1) How big is the scope?
2) How does it work practically and physically?
3) Which data sources are relevant to include?
4) Who is causing the shrinkage?

 

A yourCompany team consisting of an IT consultant, data analyst, open source specialist, an operational practitioner and a senior project manager. The customer's suppliers handed over raw data to the team and within a short time the following became clear:
- There were ghost charges for an average of DKK 65,000 per month
- The customer was exposed to complex data fraud (fuel card skimming)
- Refueling on the cars' individual fuel cards took place far from the cars' positions.

 

Within 5-6 months, all of them were ghost thoughts shut down - and almost from day one we were able to reduce costs.

2022 - result
In January, our customer had ghost refueling costs for DKK 65,000 per month.

With the help of IT and data specialists, we closed a gap in the accounts of 65,000 per month. The customer has now reduced fuel account losses by around DKK 1 million annually, as we have also automated some processes with the use of data robots, so manual personnel administration has been reduced to a minimum.

This is good bottom line money that warms in a time of inflation and high energy prices.

 

Of course, the project also resulted in a police report of data fraud, some strawman profiles were shut down, and the customer has calmed down on that front.
The scammers need to find somewhere else to commit their crimes.
