yourCompany is currently celebrating the efforts made by the police against the Zealand-based organized crime network in the automotive industry. Well done!
Leasing companies are in a pickle in many areas, and this manipulation of car identity is difficult to overcome. And one of the challenges is that leasing companies have to spend a lot of resources on verifying the identity of cars. They can't always pass this on to consumers, because competition on car prices is fierce.
At the end of the day, the pursuit of sales must always be balanced against control, and that can be a difficult balance to strike.
In the organized crime environment, we see several links that provide opportunities for fraud:
- Customs inspection and re-registration fraud
- Document forgery in the car's papers
- Changes to the car's identity (cloning)
- Misuse of people's identification documents
- Fabrication of false accounts, payslips, annual statements, etc.
- Insurance fraud to a greater extent
- And the list is far from exhaustive.
When a car is found to be cloned, it is impounded and examined further. The police initiate some technical investigations, which are technically demanding. A criminal case of fraud and forgery is then opened against the suspects involved.
But who stands to lose out in the end? It's the leasing company that has financed a car under false pretenses. Insurance typically doesn't cover the loss, which leads to a difficult process between the leasing company and the dealer about who should ”take” the loss.
So it is the full value of the car that must now be replaced by the companies' own accounts.
We often hear that it's the leasing companies” ”own fault" when they have financed a fake car. However, based on our practical experience, we believe it's a more complex story and when it comes to reducing the number of cloning cases, the arrows point in different directions:
- There should be stricter control of customs inspection companies.
- There should be a more continuous investigative focus on organized crime.
- There should be an opportunity to share knowledge across government and business.
yourCompany has launched some projects that will have a preventive focus for the industry. Together with Bilstatistik.dk, for example, an anti-fraud module is being developed to highlight some warning signs of credit fraud.
We also have some very visionary initiatives in the pipeline that we can unveil later this year.
In addition, yourCompany continues to offer leasing and financing companies assistance with:
- Preventive screenings of lessees
- Preventive vehicle inspections (physical verification of vehicle identity)
- Operational tasks such as finding missing cars
- Investigation of suspected fake documents
- Qualifying police reports
- Documentation of case progress for civil cases and coordination with lawyers.
- Coordination with authorities and insurance companies.
We only care that cases don't get to a level where police and insurance companies have to be activated. One of our mottos is funny enough: Investigation for prevention. We do what we can to reduce the number of bad cases.
We hope that our good old colleagues at the police will have the peace and quiet to process the cases so that the arrow points in one direction: towards the fraudsters.
