At yourCompany, we have many specialist areas. This is necessary, as the fight against fraud in companies has many facets. The toolbox needs to keep up. One of the somewhat overlooked areas is digital forensics, i.e. examinations of cell phones, tablets and computers, which can contain crucial evidence. It's a shame, because we're actually very good at digital forensics and have in many cases provided crucial evidence to either an employer, a lawyer or the police when needed.

At yourCompany, we have invested in expensive software for investigating cell phones, tablets and computers. Our toolbox is on par with that of the police - and yes, we also offered our services when certain text messages had been deleted and the police and defense forces had to give up. We could have solved that task, but other interests were understandably at stake. Anyone can buy the software (granted, it's not cheap), but that's only half the solution. What matters is what skills you have available - and here we can proudly say that we have one of Denmark's very best Digital Forensic specialists at our disposal. Of course, like most of our specialists, he is also a former police officer.

Meet Torben Strand, Head of Digital Forensic

Torben Strand is known in digital forensic circles, among the experts. If you need a cell phone or other IT equipment examined, Torben is top of the line, and we are super proud that Torben has chosen to work at yourCompany. Torben is a former police officer who found an interest in the IT universe along the way and is now one of Denmark's most skilled. He spent 19 years teaching at NC3, NITEC and the police academies in Stockholm and Oslo - and along the way Torben also earned an MSc FCCI from University College of Dublin. Torben has also helped create the Norwegian digital forensic education and trained the majority of the Danish police force in handling digital traces. As the latest addition, Torben Strand has been elected as an alternate technical expert by the Danish Police Complaints Board for technical assessment of evidence. An impressive background and experience that Torben now makes available to the Danish business community. At yourCompany, we do not use student assistants or IT students as we see at several of our competitors. And why is that? Because we are happy to take all our work to court if the cases require it. Experience in evidence handling and evidence assessment is essential, i.e. experience.

The purpose may be risk containment, civil action, dismissal or police reporting - or maybe just knowing what happened. Or what if you need to recover data that has been accidentally lost.

As a lawyer, you may have an estate or bankruptcy estate where IT equipment may contain crucial information about values, assets or transactions up to a certain date. As a lawyer, you may also need to help your client reach the finish line in an investigation or legal matter. In such cases, we have many times provided the crucial evidence.

As a victim, you may have experienced that the police have not been as thorough as you would like. In such cases, we can often help the victim and then help them go back to the police with the results that have been achieved. In several cases, this has led to the police reopening cases based on the new information. This could be evidence that keyloggers have been installed on your IT equipment or other clues that the police have overlooked or not investigated at all.

As an insurance company, you may need to see the G-impacts of a fall or traffic accident. Since most of us nowadays carry a cell phone or smartwatch, it is often possible to see how hard a fall or traffic accident has affected the injured person. This can both reveal insurance fraud or prove that you as the injured party are actually entitled to compensation.

Mobile phone backup - an overlooked business area

Fortunately, the world is constantly in motion. Much of our software today is used for several things. Backing up company cell phones can be one of them. Maybe you as a company need to document communication with customers or business partners that does not take place on your PC environment. SMS, Messenger, What's App, Slack and all sorts of other services are now used for communication between employees AND employees and customers. How does this affect your responsibilities as an employer? Could there be promises made that the customer will hold you to in 2-3 years? Warranty cases, financial transactions or money laundering issues are good examples, but maybe your needs are completely different.

I agree. The skills needed and the software to be invested in are costly. We can see our competitors charging a lot for this type of service. At yourCompany, our DNA is generally that everyone, or at least most people, should be able to afford the right solutions - not just the largest and wealthiest companies. That's why Digital Forensic is priced one level lower than many of our competitors. This is reflected in our services. It's also why we're not located at a nice and fancy address in Copenhagen or Aarhus, but in nice and slightly more humble premises in Greve and Kolding.
