Theft from companies is caused by a number of circumstances that combine to create a complex challenge. It's not easy to solve. If it were easy, this problem would have been solved a long time ago. But my post today is not about the scarce resources of the police or the construction industry's lack of motivation to secure itself professionally. Instead, it is to warn the industry about buying ”the cat in the bag” when it comes to security technologies. Very appropriate as we have just passed Halloween, I think.

Shrinkage in construction and craft businesses.
One of the places many companies experience theft is in hand tools and machinery. Of course, we are all insured, which is a good sleeping pillow. For many of us, our deductibles are low enough that the desire to invest in good professional security is low. Most people only secure themselves after several break-ins. The insurance companies themselves help to support this negative spiral, because none of the companies dare to make the right demands on customers for fear that the customer will move to a less restrictive insurance company.

Common denominators in shrinkage.
Let's be honest. Internal shrinkage in construction and craft businesses is often part of the problem. Through my many visits to companies, I've often gained enough familiarity with tradesmen that they often admit that they've never paid for tools before. Of course, we always speak in the past tense!

External shrinkage in the construction industry is typically break-ins to containers and company cars. This is also a major financial item. On top of the cost of new tools, there are often car or container repairs, downtime and administrative time. Companies find this annoying and expensive, but only after the damage has been done - again. Finally, there are the DIY stores, which all experience theft of hand tools as a challenge.

Common to these 3 types of theft is that the tool works fine after it has been stolen. Thus, both thief and fence are well motivated for a good deal.

Bluetooth will never be the solution.
In recent years, I have followed the development and can see that more and more professional tool brands are entering the market with solutions to solve the problem. There are also some manufacturers of Bluetooth technology that offer devices that you can mount on your tools and machines. It sounds smart at first glance, but in my opinion the industry is being misled by these solutions and I have met customers who have seriously believed in the products and have been lured into a purchase partly because they felt they were getting something extra - and smart.

Bluetooth technologies, whether factory-installed or retrofitted, promise that tools can be recovered after theft. Some even promise their customers that you can ”turn off” the tool after it has been stolen, so that neither thief nor fence can enjoy the stolen items. This is exactly the right idea and that's where we need to go - but Bluetooth will never be the solution to this.

The limitations of technology.
The idea is to use your mobile phone to get in touch with the stolen tool and either get information about its location or tell the tool that it has been stolen and must now stop working. The problems here are many. Bluetooth has a very limited range and a phone must be within a few meters before it will be able to communicate with the tool. Walking past on the street will rarely be enough. The next problem is that the mobile phone must have an app installed, which must be turned on at the exact moment you theoretically come into contact with the tool. Several manufacturers have created their own app and as a citizen and craftsman, you need to have several different apps installed on your phone as few people only use one brand of tool. The tool must either be battery-powered - and connected to a battery, or be a 230V tool connected to a power outlet. Otherwise the tool is not safe to come into contact with. Finally, you should be aware that if all of the above succeeds, which is theoretically possible but hardly likely, you as the owner of the tool will receive a message that a cell phone has seen the tool at a given location. Is this where the tool is actually located? No, it isn't. Because the information you receive is a GPS position from the mobile phone with the app. So the tool could be somewhere else nearby. Of course, this is better than nothing. For example, if it's on a country estate, you theoretically have a chance, but if it's in a residential area, traffic, parking lot or similar, the information is close to worthless. You never get the police out to search 4-8 houses or cars because the unit is somewhere nearby. It only happens if you can pinpoint the specific address.

Logistics management.
Many companies sell ”both and” and will also tell you that Bluetooth technology is also used for resource management in your company. So you get 2 for 1 for the price and it may tempt those who don't know any better. All I can say is that it works just as badly as the thief part and will rarely be worth the money.

Conclusion.
Don't buy Bluetooth technology because your company wants to reduce waste or optimize logistics. Instead, look for other solutions such as RFID, SIGFOX or LoRa. These technologies are entering the market and can work. We must therefore put pressure on tool manufacturers to use these technologies or others that may come along rather than relying on last generation technology. With this article, I hope to save you from expensive lessons and annoyances.

Christian Pejtersen, yourCompany

Fraud in the construction industry is a known and widespread problem.
